Known problems:   caused by how to recognize: what to do:
Automatic gear position switch Not functioning water, corrosion Text in display telling that the transmission is out of order or no message and no gear indication or no gear selection Make a bridge at the connector beside the transmission body (under the car). Connect the 2 cables shown.

Display now shows "P". Attention: After this manipulation the car can be started in every gear


Known problems:   caused by how to recognize: what to do:
Induction pulse trigger loose coming loose vibration misses, does not take gas tighten it! Accessible only from under the car, to the left under the flywheel


Towing: Max. 50 kilometers , max. speed 50 km/h. All 4 wheels on or off the road. You will have no power brake, but the brakes remain functionable, you only must push way harder on the pedal. RR from 97 on: electric power steering pump, so switch ignition to "ON". Under the passenger seat is the fuse box. In the empty slot #11 you must insert a fuse. This causes the transfer case to switch to "towed mode". Text in display either shows a gearbox malfunction or box in neutral.

Electronic engine lock WFS - if you loose your transmitter you have a problem.

Indicated by LED on instrument cluster, Text in display. The engine will not start, there are several independant locking devices.

The WFS engages: By transmitter, or 5 minutes after ignition cut off, or 30 seconds after drivers door is opened.

Deactivation only by transmitter, hold transmitter near ignition lock and try several times. Emergency deactivation as follwing:

Open the car, get the code from the safety card. Lock vehicle completely.

Insert key in drivers door lock. The code is a set of 4 numbers. For keying in the first number turn the key as many times to the UNLOCK position as the first number is. The second number is then keyed in by turning as man times to LOCK position. The third number is turned again to UNLOCK, the forth is turned to LOCK. At the end of the sequence unlock the door, wait some seconds and open the door. If you made it right, the vehicle will now start with the ignition key.

After 3 wrong sequences (5 on older vehicles) the system is locked for 30 minutes. If you open the door immediately after a mistake the sequence is canceled and does not count as wrong. But you must restart the procedure.

Sorry, but the drawing comes from a german book so the abreviations are german abreviations. I'll add the english meanings as soon as possible. The numbers are the standardised electric numbering system and this will lead us a bit far away if I'd try to list them all.

Danger when the battery is flat

When you reload it by using starter cables, the doors will lock as soon as power comes. So open door first.

When the battery is disconnected the alarm goes off for 4 minutes @ 105dB! To avoid this either disable alarm by transmitter or, better, turn ignition on and off and in the next 15 seconds you can disconnect the battery without triggering the alarm.
